Oh Ohane... I love your clear water and 9,000 shades of green.
This stellar run starts out in Mt. Rainier National Park and then flows right into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
Access is a breeze. The takeout is at a very well maintained and easy to see (from the river) campground, the put in is at Secret Camp; one of the best places to kayak camp in the PNW.
The Ohane is a great place to step up your creeking if you’ve got a patient crew and you’re into that kind of thing. It’s also a great place to just have a good time and relax in one of the few places in the state where there is generally more SUN than clouds, and the whole scene conveys a sense that you’re paddling into a JRR Tolkien story.
I was able to get a quick lap in towards the end of July this year and levels were a bit on the low side. But, the low side of good is still better than the high side of bad.
Blah, blah, blah PICTURES!!!! Check out another great video at the bottom of the post from Mr. Kurle over at BoogieWater.
The first main ledge of the day, aptly named Log Boof. A sweet rail slide move with some serious consequences on river right. The big boulder on the left side of the photo is a pretty serious sieve. Be careful!
The best part of the day: Ohane Falls.
Robby had a sweet entry move here. I usually only get to see The Rob loop his creekboats…
Connor Dixon with the line of the day. I wish I had gotten down to this spot for the other guys. Connor makes the main falls look so, so easy.
Next up is Petrified, immediately below Ohane Falls. This drop warrants safety and some fore-thought. There have been several injuries here in the last couple of years.
Another great trip in the bag. Get some of the Ohane if you’re in town, it’s worth the effort and time.
And then there was this…
